The Argus Cycle Race (13 March 2011) – 110 km’s
In March 2011 I embarked on my first ever Argus Cycle Tour with the sole purpose of raising as much money as I could for The Sunflower Fund.
I had started cycling in August 2010 as a way of improving my running fitness and with the aim of entering a triathlon before the end of 2010. I soon enjoyed cycling immensely and decided to take on the Argus Cycle Tour in 2011 with my good friend Jason Taylor. We had a lot of fun training towards our goal and he was really supportive of my fundraising drive for The Sunflower Fund.
We arrived on race day super excited and probably looking like two young kids. The race itself was perhaps not everything I had wished on the day as I was a victim of 5 punctures along the route. Knowing that I was riding for more than myself and not wanting to quit or fail we eventually crossed the finish line taking well over 5 hours. It wasnt my greatest day on a bike but the fact that Jason had stayed with me and wanted to see the day through with me meant an immeasurable amount. The race taught me a lot about friendship, perseverance, humour and staying positive.
My fundraising efforts however were richly rewarded in raising an incredible R10 000 for The Sunflower Fund. It was without doubt one of the proudest days of my life and I vowed to continue to challenge myself and in doing so raise awareness and funds for The Sunflower Fund. It is my way of paying a humble tribute to my brother and all of the Leukaemia sufferors and their families that have experienced this life threatening illness.
